Barter has a big problem: you can only trade when the other person wants exactly what you have. People got tired of walking around trying to find the perfect swap. So they came up with a clever idea to fix it. That idea was money.
Money is something that everyone agrees to accept in a trade. Long ago, people used salt, shells, beads, and even cows as money. Later they made coins out of metal, and much later they printed paper bills. No matter what it is made of, money works because everyone will take it.
Here is why money is so helpful. Instead of trading apples straight for bread, you can sell your apples to anyone for money. Then you take that money to the baker and buy your bread. The baker is happy to take the money, even though he did not want your apples.
Money makes trading fast and fair. It is fast because you do not have to hunt for someone who wants your exact thing. It is fair because everyone agrees on how much things cost, so people know what a fair price looks like.
Money is also easy to save and carry. You cannot save apples for very long because they rot, and you cannot carry a cow in your pocket. But you can keep coins in a jar for months and slip a few bills into your wallet.
Because money solves the swapping problem, people can trade with almost anyone. This one invention changed the whole world and made buying and selling much easier than it ever was with barter.
