Data is just a fancy word for pieces of information, like the answers your friends give to a question. Imagine you ask your whole class what their favorite fruit is. The answers come in as one big messy pile of words.

A messy pile is hard to understand. But if you put all the apple answers together, all the banana answers together, and all the grape answers together, suddenly it makes sense. Sorting answers into groups turns a messy pile into something you can count.

Each group is like its own basket with a label on it. When a new answer comes in, you drop it into the basket that matches. By the end, every answer has a home, and no answer is left in the mess.
