A government is like a team of people whose job is to help everyone in a town, state, or country live and work together. You cannot see the whole government at once, but you can see the things it does all around you — the stop signs on your street, the school you go to, and the firefighters who rush to help when there is an emergency.

One of the biggest jobs of government is making laws. A law is a rule that everyone has to follow to keep people safe and fair. Laws tell us to stop at red lights, to go to school, and to treat other people kindly. Without laws, it would be hard for a big group of people to get along.

Government also keeps people safe. Police officers help stop people from breaking laws, and firefighters put out fires. There are also leaders who plan what to do during storms or other emergencies so that everyone knows how to stay safe.

Another big job is running shared services. These are things that many people use together, like libraries, parks, roads, and clean water. One family could not build a whole road by itself, so the government helps build and take care of things that everyone shares.

Government works at different sizes, too. Your town has a local government, your state has its own government, and the whole country has a national government in Washington, D.C. Each level takes care of different jobs, from fixing a neighborhood park to protecting the whole nation.

The most important idea is that government is here to help people live together fairly and safely. When you use a library book, cross at a crosswalk, or drink water from a fountain, you are seeing your government's big jobs at work.
