Our solar system is like a giant family in space, and the Sun is the parent right in the middle. The Sun is a star, which means it is a huge ball of hot, glowing gas. Everything else in the family circles around it.

Eight planets travel around the Sun in big loops called orbits. Some planets are close and warm, and some are far away and freezing cold. Earth, the planet we live on, is the third one out from the Sun.

The Sun's gravity is like an invisible rope that holds everything in place. Gravity is a pull that keeps each planet on its path so it does not fly off into deep space. Without the Sun's gravity, the planets would wander away.

The solar system has more than just planets. There are moons that circle the planets, chunks of rock called asteroids, and icy comets with long glowing tails. Even tiny bits of dust are part of the family.

Everything in the solar system moves. Planets spin like tops while they travel around the Sun. One full trip around the Sun is what we call a year, and Earth takes about 365 days to finish its trip.

Scientists study the solar system to learn where we live in space. Knowing how planets move helps them send spacecraft to visit other worlds and take amazing pictures for us to see.
